Site cleared for new commercial/apartment redevelopment

Work is continuing to clear the land of debris and trees for the planned redevelopment of the former United Canadian Malt building site at Lansdowne and Park streets.

The Malt building may soon be converted into apartments — and the cleared vacant land along Lansdowne Street to the west may get three new commercial/residential buildings.

Located across from Home Depot, the property is owned by David and J.R. McGee, the brothers who run the Jack McGee car dealership on Clonsilla Avenue. They're also developers.

They gently cross the five-lane street from a pedestrian crosswalk and take a trail across town to work.

Anyone who works or drives down Lansdowne every day could see this as a fantasy. For the city’s planners and consultants, it’s a strong possibility.

Ambitious plan brewing for former United Canadian Malt plant in Peterborough

The former United Canadian Malt building on Lansdowne and Park St. N. may soon be converted into apartments — and the vacant land along Lansdowne St. to the west may get three new commercial/residential buildings, too.

The Malt building is located at the intersection of Park and Lansdowne streets, across from Home Depot.

It's owned by David and J.R. McGee, the brothers who run the Jack McGee car dealership on Clonsilla Ave. They're also developers.

They also own the vacant land to the west along Lansdowne St, which runs to the Taco Bell property at Lansdowne St. and Monaghan Rd. In total, it's almost nine acres of space.

Plans in place to turn prime Peterborough property into residential/


commercial development

Planning is well underway to transform a swath of prime Lansdowne Street West real estate into a residential/commercial development.

The owners of the former United Canadian Malt property, located on the south side of Lansdowne between Park Street and Monaghan Road, are in the planning stages to turn the existing food manufacturing plant into residential units. They are also planning to build three, L-shaped residential/commercial complexes along the vacant Lansdowne property.

Pre-renovation tour of the old Canada Malt building

The new owners of the former United Canadian Malt building say they're planning to develop high-end apartments there.

David and J.R. McGee, the brothers who run the Jack McGee car dealership on Clonsilla Ave., own the Malt building. They're also developers.

They say they're planning to convert their building into residences.

"Our intention is to build higher-end, loft-style apartments," said David McGee.

The building is located at the intersection of Park and Lansdowne Streets (kitty-corner from Kawartha TV & Stereo).

An agreement of Purchase and Sale has been completed on the Canadian Malt property at 843 Park Street South, Peterborough, Ontario, K9J 3V1

The vendor United Canadian Malt Ltd. has agreed to terms with Evergreen Leasing Inc. an Ontario real estate company wholly owned by J.R and David McGee

The property is across from Home Depot and encompasses 8 + acres of which 1,610 feet are directly on Lansdowne Street. 

Evergreen Leasing has begun preliminary discussions with Peterborough City planning, building and zoning staff and look forward to a consensus on developing the property. 

Plans for the property are to change the zoning from the current industrial zoning to commercial.  Focus will be on a prestige development that compliments the neighbourhood in terms of tenants and design. 

The new owners are mindful that this is a fundamentally significant piece of land along Peterborough’s busiest corridor and as such have a keen interest in making this an outstanding development.

Old United Canadian Malt building sold, new owners have plans for commercial development

A vacant industrial building located at one of the city's key intersections has been sold.

The old United Canadian Malt building, which closed last year, has been sold to Evergreen Leasing Inc., a company owned by J.R. And David McGee of Peterborough.

The art deco-style building, located at Lansdowne and Park streets, directly across from Home Depot, is an eight-acre parcel featuring a large industrial building.
